Caring Companions Program

For women who have recently lost a child to miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death, Franciscan Health Indianapolis offers support and comfort with our Caring Companions service. Caring Companions are mothers who have lost a child and are certified volunteers who seek to bring comfort to other parents going through a pregnancy loss.

Caring Companions Program

Overview

Stillbirth (the loss of a child during the last 20 weeks of pregnancy), miscarriage (the loss of a child during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy) or neonatal death are tragic events for a family. The grief of a pregnancy loss can also raise the risk of postpartum depression in the mother. At Franciscan Health, we go beyond medical treatment to help the family heal during this difficult time.

Offered at Franciscan Health Indianapolis, Caring Companions are mothers who have lost a child to miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death. These women feel called to share their experiences and bring comfort to other parents going through pregnancy loss. Caring Companions are not nurses. They are trained volunteers certified as RTS (Resolve Through Sharing) caregivers. There is no fee for their time and services, which include:

  • Making mementos and taking pictures of your precious baby
  • Providing information to your questions
  • Providing support to you and your family

Support groups

People cope with grief in different ways. Some benefit from our free, parent support groups. These groups typically meet monthly and are open to parents at any time – no matter when their loss was experienced. Talk to your health care provider about Franciscan Health support groups in your area.

Grieving the loss of your baby

  • Pay attention to your health. Eat and sleep well so your body stays strong.
  • Find ways to express your feelings. Talking to family and friends, joining a support group and keeping a journal are some ways to express grief.
  • Educate yourself. Getting answers to questions and understanding how other people have coped can help you.
  • Give yourself time to heal. Grieving is a process. Accept that it will take time.
