Martha, a breast cancer survivor and retired hospital chaplain, has emerged as a beacon of hope and support for local cancer survivors.

After being completing breast cancer treatment at Franciscan Health Indianapolis in 2021, Martha joined the hospital’s Moving Beyond cancer survivorship program. She’s since dedicated herself to helping others as a volunteer in the program for Indianapolis area cancer survivors.

A Fortunate Diagnosis

More than 18 months ago, Martha received the life-altering news that she had breast cancer. The tumor had been swiftly removed through a lumpectomy before the doctors even confirmed its malignant nature.

“It was so fortunate that it was out of my body before they knew it was cancer,” Martha recalled. “It was a tiny tumor with clean margins.”

This stroke of luck became the catalyst for her remarkable journey of healing and self-discovery.

Finding Strength In Every Breath

Inspired by Jimmy Buffet's song, "Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On," Martha has embraced a philosophy of living in the present and truly appreciating life's blessings. She emphasizes the importance of gratitude. This renewed perspective allows her to focus on the positive aspects of her life, fostering resilience and inspiring others in the process.

The Moving Beyond Program

During the peak of the pandemic, Martha reluctantly decided to join the Moving Beyond program, an eight-week program for cancer patients and family members through Franciscan Health Indianapolis. Moving Beyond offers exercise with an instructor, guided lessons in stress reduction, healthy eating and lifestyle habits, confidence building strategies and emotional support.

“I went into it thinking ‘I know how to do this.’ I didn’t,” she said. “It’s not the same journey when it’s your own. It’s hard for a human being to not know.”

Engaging with fellow survivors in the then-virtual program, Martha realized the comprehensive nature of the cancer experience and its impact on every facet of one's life. This realization further fueled her determination to make a difference and support others who may be navigating similar challenges.

A Beacon Of Hope And Knowledge

Martha's involvement with Franciscan Health’s Moving Beyond program has evolved from being a participant to returning the hospital where she once served as a hospice and palliative care chaplain.

“I didn’t realize how much I missed it until I taught the class in person,” she said. “I thought, ‘That’s why I love what I do.’”

Rediscovering her passion for assisting others, she realized that her calling extended far beyond her own cancer journey. Her profound love for what she does serves as a testament to the transformative power of helping others during their darkest moments.

Leading the spirituality section of the program as a volunteer instructor, Martha guides survivors in exploring the diverse dimensions of spirituality and its connection to their individual experiences. Martha emphasizes that spirituality extends beyond religious affiliation and encourages patients to recognize the awe-inspiring moments life has to offer.

The Power Of Personal Stories

Drawing from her own journey, Martha emphasizes the importance of asking questions and seeking clarity. She understands the fears and uncertainties that can arise when interacting with medical professionals. By openly sharing her experiences and knowledge, Martha empowers others to advocate for themselves, fostering a more informed and confident patient community.

Martha's story exemplifies the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. As a breast cancer survivor, former chaplain and dedicated volunteer, she has harnessed her experiences to inspire and support others through the Moving Beyond cancer survivorship program. Martha's compassionate nature demonstrates the profound impact that a single individual can have on the lives of those facing similar challenges. Her journey is a testament to the power of selflessness, empathy and the hope that lies within every cancer survivor.
