Joan Gutzwiller, a retired teacher from Indianapolis, never imagined routine checkups would uncover a journey that would test her strength. A three-time survivor of endometrial cancer, Joan’s experience is a testament to the power of early detection, perseverance and compassionate care.

In 2010, after going through menopause, Joan started to notice an unusual symptom, and she talked to her doctor. After several tests, they found cancer cells, Joan recalled.

“My providers decided I needed a hysterectomy because there was a tumor on my uterus,” Joan said. “So, I had a complete hysterectomy and didn’t need chemotherapy or radiation after that, but I did have regular follow-up visits for five years.”

Overcoming The Unexpected

Life went on for Joan. But a decade later, while preparing for a routine bladder procedure, Joan’s journey took an unexpected turn. During surgery, Brent Suozzi, MD, a urology, urogynecology and OBGYN specialist, found a tumor on her pelvic wall. With quick action, a biopsy was taken, marking the beginning of her second battle with endometrial cancer.

The treatment involved 36 radiation sessions and chemotherapy boosters managed by gynecologic oncologist Tina Ayeni, MD, and oncologists Sandeep Bhave, MD and Naveed Rana, MD, at the Franciscan Health Cancer Center.

“It was a peaceful journey, which I had not anticipated. My team was wonderful,” Joan said. “They were dedicated to me and my wellbeing and provided expert care and the emotional support my husband and I needed during this challenging time.”

One of the most memorable moments for Joan was ringing the symbolic cancer bell at the end of her treatment—a tradition at Franciscan Health that marks a patient’s transition from active treatment to survivorship. Joan remembers this moment as a powerful reminder of her resilience and the compassionate care she received. It made her feel hopeful about the future.

A Third Cancer Battle Fought With Unwavering Spirit

In 2022, Joan faced a third diagnosis when a scan revealed a new tumor beneath the skin of her abdomen.

“For the third time, pathology diagnosed it as endometrial cancer,” Joan said.

Despite this recurrence, she again faced cancer with her enduring optimism and the support of her family and medical team.

“I’ve been cancer-free since then,” she said. “I feel blessed and hope it doesn’t come back.”

“I’m an advocate of regular checkups,” Joan said. “And when you notice something that doesn’t seem right, it’s important to talk with your provider.”

Today, Joan is committed to leading a healthy lifestyle with support from Robin Eads, DNP at Franciscan Healthy Living Center.

“She’s taught me so much about mindful choices,” Joan explains. “She’s like my life coach and her dedication to wellness inspires those around her. She gives relatable and doable guidance on lifestyle changes that can help reduce your future health risks.”

Compassionate Care Brings Hope

Throughout her journey, Joan experienced firsthand the collaborative care Franciscan Health offers. With her dedicated team, Joan’s resilience and trust in her providers guided her through each challenge.

“They work as a team to figure out the best path,” Joan recalls.

In addition to her treatments, Joan also had a genetic cancer screening to assess her risk factors, a step she hopes others might consider as part of their preventive care if they are at an increased risk. Although her screening showed no genetic markers, she felt reassured knowing she’d done all she could for her health—and her daughter and granddaughters’ future.

Life Beyond Cancer

Joan’s journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of regular checkups, attentive care and a positive outlook. Her resilience inspires others facing similar challenges to prioritize their health. Her message to others: “When you see something, say something.”

Today, Joan and her husband are embracing life with a sense of purpose and joy.

“There’s something out there you’re meant to do. No matter what age, the chapters just keep coming,” she shares.

For Joan and her husband, retirement isn’t about slowing down; as they put it, “We didn’t retire—we repurposed.” After 53 years of marriage, Joan said, “You might sometimes take each other for granted, but I can’t imagine going through this alone, so thanks, honey.”

With newfound energy from friends and family, Joan stays productively busy, as she puts it. “I find joy in volunteer work, helping others and spending time with loved ones.” Joan and Steve have been therapy dog escorts with the Pet Partners Program at Franciscan Health for the last two years. They are in the process of completing this training with their black lab, Murphy, and hope to be regular visitors at Franciscan Health in the near future.
