About This Treatment
Allergy immunotherapy is often given in the form of allergy shots. This treatment involves receiving shots over time to build your body's immunity and ability to fight off allergens.
When you begin receiving allergy shots they are typically done one to two times a week for several weeks. Your doctor will increase your dose each time until you are on the maximum dose. Once you reach the maximum dose, your allergy shots may only occur every other week and then go down to once a month. This process can vary in time and last around one to five years (or sometimes longer) before you are totally done and no longer need allergy shots.
Most people do get better and see a reduction in symptoms with allergy shots. While some people notice the effects of allergy shots within the first few months to a year, it can take longer for others (sometimes 12-18 months) before a significant difference is noticed.
