About This Treatment
Franciscan Health offers outpatient psychiatric services for children and adults. Many patients benefit from seeing a psychiatrist in addition to a therapist or psychologist, for medication management.
Psychiatric treatment is typically provided by a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner (PNP). A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with special training in behavioral and mental health conditions. They understand how to diagnose and treat and are able to prescribe medication. A psychiatric nurse practitioner (PNP) is an advanced practice nurse who is clinically focused in behavioral and mental healthcare. PNPs can also diagnose, treat and manage medication.
When should I see a psychiatrist?
You should see a psychiatrist if you think you may need evaluation or medication for a mental health diagnosis. Sometimes a therapist or counselor will suggest that you meet with a psychiatrist, as these services often go together.
Today, many mental health conditions can be very successfully managed through regular and ongoing appointments with the right mental health services. Patients with ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and numerous other diagnosis can greatly benefit from medication management.
When possible, early intervention is ideal. Untreated mental health problems can lead to increased risk and negative outcomes. Seeking treatment early can help to improve life at home and school, as well as future outcomes.
How to get an appointment with a psychiatrist
Because psychiatrists are considered specialists, some insurance plans require that you obtain a referral from your primary care provider. If you need a referral, please contact your primary care provider’s office or call the location of your choice directly to schedule an appointment.
