About This Test
Neurosensory testing measures the pressure threshold felt in the skin. By applying pressure to the skin around a specific nerve, nerve damage can be determined by how much pressure is needed before the person feels the touch.
An individual with healthy nerves will feel a light touch. A person with nerve damage, particularly nerve damage caused by neuropathy, will require a greater pressure for the touch to be felt.
NST is currently offered through Franciscan Health's Wound Healing & Prevention Institute locations in Dyer and Hammond.
Neurosensory testing to help fight neuropathy
Neurosensory testing (NST) is a state-of-the-art, accurate, painless, non-invasive tool used to measure the degree of neuropathy from its earliest onset. Since neuropathy is a progressive disease, the early detection that NST provides is vital. Quantitative somatosensory threshold testing, like NST, is recommended by the American Diabetes Association.
Neuropathy is the lack of normal sensation that affects an extremity; this is most common in diabetics. It is also the leading cause of ulceration, infection, and with advanced cases, amputation.
