Our Approach
In the case of sickle cell anemia, red blood cells – normally round and flexible – are stiff and crescent shaped causing them to get caught in small blood vessels, interfering with the flow of blood and oxygen. Sickle Cell Anemia is a hereditary condition; both parents must carry the gene.
Sickle cell can lead to complications such as stroke, pulmonary hypertension, acute chest syndrome, organ damage, priapism, skin ulcers, gallstones, blindness and death. While there is no cure, a number of treatments are available to assist with pain and complications.
