Our Approach
Psoriasis is diagnosed through a person's medical history and an examination of his or her skin, scalp and nails.
Although there isn't a cure, psoriasis treatments may offer relief and clear up symptoms. Psoriasis treatments are designed to stop the skin cells from growing as quickly, which can help reduce inflammation and remove the build-up of skin, rashes and scales.
Treatment for psoriasis can include:
- Prescription lotions
- Light therapy
- Oral medications
- Medications by injection or through an intravenous (IV) infusion
A doctor who specializes in dermatology, or treating skin disorders, can assess the severity of psoriasis and recommend the best treatment.
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a lasting skin condition that causes cells to build up quickly on the skin’s surface; it typically appears as small red bumps that grow and form silvery scales that can bleed if scratched. This condition often begins in early adulthood but can also start earlier in life. While a cause is still unknown, psoriasis is thought to be related to an immune system problem with cells in the body. Severity is often dependent upon specific triggers (i.e. infection, stress, cold weather, etc.) and is not contagious.
The following factors can increase a person’s risk for psoriasis:
- Family history
- Viral and bacterial infections
- Smoking
- Obesity
