Our Approach
At Franciscan Health, our doctors treat anal warts with:
- Prescription creams
- Electrocauterization (burns off warts with an electric current)
- Surgery
If anal warts are located inside the anal canal, you will most likely need electrocauterization or surgical removal. Surgical removal has the highest success rates and lowest return rates.
If the virus that causes anal warts remains in the surrounding tissue, you may need anal wart treatment again.
What are anal warts?
Anal warts (condyloma acuminata) are raised, fleshy bumps that form in and around the anus. They usually start as small, tiny blemishes that sometimes grow larger.
Anal warts are rarely painful or uncomfortable. In fact, most people are unaware they have them.
What causes anal warts?
The human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11 cause about 90% of all anal warts. While some types of HPV can lead to cancer, types 6 and 11 are not likely to.
You can get HPV through direct sexual contact with someone infected with HPV.
