Transoral Outlet Reduction (TORe)

About This Treatment

A transoral outlet reduction, or TORe, is an endoscopic procedure for gastric bypass patients that have regained weight or have not experienced expected weight loss following bariatric surgery.

What is a transoral outlet reduction or TORe procedure? 

This procedure reduces the size of the opening between the stomach and small intestines (gastric outlet), which if enlarged can cause weight regain. Once the gastric opening is reduced, your stomach will empty more slowly. This will make you feel full for longer and make it easier to stay on track with your nutrition plan.  

An interventional gastroenterologist performs this minimally invasive procedure by using an endoscope to place sutures that make the gastric opening smaller. This procedure is typically done in an outpatient setting, meaning you should be able to go home the same day. Following surgery, you will need to follow a modified diet for one to two weeks. 

What is an endoscope?

An endoscope is a long, flexible tube that has a light and camera on it. For this procedure, it is inserted via the mouth or anus and follows the GI tract until it reaches the gastric opening where stitches are then placed.
