Exercise Stress Test

About This Test

There are two common types of stress tests, treadmill tests and exercise stress tests. An exercise stress test may require up three-to-four hours to complete, while a treadmill test typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. Both serve as a method for identifying blocked coronary arteries, as well as any previous heart damage. Your stress test will allow your physician to evaluate blood flow to the heart muscle. You should wear comfortable walking shoes and loose-fitting clothing for your appointment.

Patients can expect:

  • An IV line to be placed in your arm, through which a small radioactive tracer is administered. No side effects should be expected.
  • An imaging scan of your heart is performed while you are lying down or reclining.
  • You will be asked to either walk on a treadmill (approximately three to 12 minutes) or receive a medication that stimulates the effects of exercise (medication is used when a patient is unable to exercise adequately).
  • An additional infusion of tracer is administered, followed by a second imaging scan. This occurs for all patients, but timing will vary depending on whether you're on the treadmill or receiving medication.
  • Your EKG and blood pressure will be monitored constantly.

Prior to your stress test:

  • You must avoid caffeine for 12 hours; this includes chocolate, coffee, energy bars, energy drinks, diet supplements, tea and soda (even decaf). Caffeine consumption may result in your test being rescheduled.
  • A light meal, up to four hours prior, is permitted.
  • Do not smoke or use smoking cessation gum, patches, etc.
  • Ask your physician about any current medications, as some prescription or over-the-counter medications should be avoided for up to 48 hours prior to a stress test.
