About This Screening
Sudden heart disease sometimes strikes without symptoms. A coronary calcium scan (heart scan) offers early detection by measuring calcium buildup in coronary arteries—an early sign of heart disease. This noninvasive, high-speed CT test takes about 10 minutes and provides a calcium score that helps gauge your risk for coronary artery disease with more detail than a standard CT scan. Your doctor will also consider your age, family history, and cholesterol levels to better understand your heart disease risk.
What does a calcium score mean on heart scan results?
Heart scan results are given as a calcium score, where a score of zero indicates a very low risk of significant heart disease. Higher calcium scores suggest a greater buildup of plaque and may require lifestyle changes or cholesterol-lowering medications.
What to expect during your heart scan (calcium scoring test):
- Electrocardiogram leads will be placed on your chest to synchronize the scan with your heartbeats.
- You will be lying comfortably on the exam table for about five minutes, though the scan takes only seconds.
- A free heart risk assessment is included with every screening.
- Fasting is required for a heart scan.
- Jewelry and metal items must be removed.
Who qualifies for a heart scan?
Heart scans are for men and women age 40+, with one or more of the following risk factors:
- Current or former smoker
- Diabetes
- Family history of heart disease (parent or sibling)
- Abnormal cholesterol levels (high total cholesterol or low HDL "good" cholesterol)
- High blood pressure or are being treated for high blood pressure
How much does a heart scan cost?
At Franciscan Health a heart scan costs $49 out of pocket. Not all screenings are available at every imaging center and you must meet the qualifications for each. A free heart risk assessment is included with every screening.
