Our heartbeats are powered by electricity, and sometimes the heart develops a short circuit caused by genetics, age and/or lifestyle. When that happens, your doctor may order an electrophysiology study to help determine the cause of the arrhythmias, the site of the issue, and the best treatment options.
During an electrophysiology (EP) study, a cardiac electrophysiologist— a physician specially trained to diagnose and treat irregular heart rhythms—carefully numbs a small area in the groin and inserts a thin, flexible tubes called catheters through the blood vessels and into the heart. Once in place, these catheters detect and record the heart’s electrical signals in real time. The electrophysiologist can then see how impulses travel through the heart’s chambers and conduction pathways. In some cases, the electrophysiologist may deliver mild electrical stimulation to pinpoint where an arrhythmia starts, assess how the heart responds, and determine the safest, most effective treatment options. This detailed evaluation provides a comprehensive picture of the heart’s electrical system, helps confirm a diagnosis, and guides decisions about medications or procedures such as cardiac ablation.
Electrophysiology treatments may include:
- Cardiac ablation: This treatment blocks abnormal electrical pathways of the heart where rhythm disturbances begin aims to restore a steady, coordinated heartbeat. Guided by catheters and real-time mapping, clinicians target small sections of heart tissue responsible for atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, or certain tachycardias. The procedure can reduce symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, and fatigue, and may lessen reliance on long-term medications.
- Implantable defibrillator (ICD): An ICD can be inserted to to deliver electrical impulses and restore a normal heart rhythm.
- Pacemaker: A pacemaker can be inserted to maintain a normal heart rhythm.

What to expect when recovering from an electrophysiology study?
An EP study is typically performed on an outpatient basis, and recovery varies by individual. Most people recover within three to seven days. Plan to rest and avoid strenuous activity on the first day. After that, gradually increase your activity while avoiding heavy lifting. Mild soreness or bruising at the catheter insertion site is also possible. If sedation is necessary you will need transportation from the procedure and cannot drive for at least 24 hours. If an ablation is performed, your doctor will likely recommend that you avoid driving for two to three days.How do I get connected to care?
