Our Approach
While hips, knees and shoulders may be our focus, our staff is truly dedicated to leading you back to the activities you love best - an afternoon on the golf course, a walk through the park, a slow dance with that special someone. That's our specialty.
Each Franciscan hip replacement surgery team is made up of board-certified orthopedic surgeons, interventional radiologists, trained orthopedic nurses and physical therapists. Internal medicine physicians are on staff for pre-operative physical exams and screenings. Our experienced orthopedic surgeons participate in numerous research projects to advance in the field of joint replacement.
About This Procedure
Having a hip replaced used to be only for the elderly. Today, total joint replacement surgery with state-of-the-art materials and techniques – some of which are being pioneered at Franciscan Health – gives patients in their 50s and younger relief from the pain and loss of mobility caused by deteriorating hips. We understand the importance of an active lifestyle and finding the best hip replacement for active people.
The main benefit you can expect from total joint replacement is pain relief, which can be quite dramatic. However, total hip replacement is not the answer for everyone. Some people find hip pain relief without surgery. That is why it is important for you to get a proper diagnosis from an orthopedic specialist.
After hip replacement recovery, most patients enjoy:
- A dramatic reduction in pain-even post-surgical discomfort can be gone within weeks
- Increased strength and ability to use your legs and the ability to build muscle
- Ease of movement - almost immediately and for many years to come
- Enhanced quality of life with the capacity to take on daily tasks and activities in greater comfort
Robotic surgery for total joint replacement
No two joints are the same. That's why robotic surgery can help personalize a surgical plan, especially when it comes to joint replacement surgery. With robotics, surgeons are able to cut less, which can mean less soft tissue damage and greater bone preservation for some patients. This technology allows surgeons to create a personalized plan based on each patient's unique anatomy before entering the operating room. During surgery, the physician can validate that plan and make any necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic arm to execute the plan.
Franciscan Health Orthopedic Hospital Carmel and Franciscan Health Lafayette East offer the Mako SmartRobotics surgical system for total hip and knee replacements.
