About This Treatment
Typically treatment for a dislocated shoulder will involve popping your shoulder joint back into place. You will be given a local anesthetic and your doctor will put the ball of your upper arm bone back into the joint socket. Your pain may stop almost immediately.
You may wear a sling to immobilize your shoulder for up to two weeks. After treatment, rehabilitation, such as physical therapy at Franciscan Health, may help prevent future dislocations. Your doctor will advise you when you can resume your regular activities.
Shoulder dislocation surgery
Shoulder dislocation surgery is normally not necessary. You may require surgery if your doctor cannot relocate your shoulder, or if you have injured nerves or tissue.
How is a dislocated shoulder diagnosed?
To diagnose a dislocated shoulder and determine its condition, Franciscan Health shoulder specialists will perform an examination of your shoulder that may include an X-ray.
What is a dislocated shoulder?
