About This Procedure
During shoulder replacement surgery, your damaged joint is replaced with an artificial shoulder made of metal and plastic (prosthetic shoulder). You'll get the best care, delivered using the latest technology, close to home. Best of all, you'll be on your way to reclaiming the freedom that comes from living an active life.
A conventional prosthetic shoulder mimics your normal anatomy and is the most common type of replacement surgery. At Franciscan Health, we offer minimally invasive total shoulder replacement. You might be able to go home the same day. If your arthritis stems from a complex or large rotator cuff tear, you may have a better outcome with a reverse total shoulder replacement.
Recovery after a shoulder replacement surgery
After total shoulder replacement, you will begin rehabilitation and physical therapy. This is an important part of your care to ensure the best results from your shoulder replacement. Full recovery of total shoulder replacement may take up to six months, depending on your condition.
Why would you need a shoulder replacement?
You may have a total shoulder replacement to relieve extreme pain and reduced range of motion resulting from conditions such as:
- Broken bone in the arm near the shoulder
- Failed previous shoulder surgery
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Torn or damaged shoulder tissues
- Tumor in or near the shoulder
