About This Treatment
Acupuncture is a form of ancient Chinese medicine. The therapy treats disharmony in the body by moving energy along channels, or meridians. Balancing disharmony can help the body heal and return to homeostasis (stability).
At Franciscan Health, we combine the acupuncture treatment philosophy with Western medicine. Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals that can change the experience of pain or activate the body’s own healing systems.
Acupuncture may help with a variety of physical and mental health issues, including:
- Alcohol and drug addictions
- Allergies
- Arthritis
- Chronic fatigue
- Chronic pain
- Headaches
- Infertility
- Insomnia
- Restless leg syndrome
- Side effects from cancer treatment
- Smoking cessation
- Sports injuries
- Stress
- Weight loss
What to expect during acupuncture treatment
During an acupuncture treatment, we place thin, sterile needles in various pressure points (acupoints) throughout the body. The needle placement is usually painless and well tolerated by most patients.
The number of needles inserted depends on the specific treatment plan. The acupuncturist can place as few as two needles or as many as 40, depending on what is being treated and how the energy needs to be directed. The needles are generally left in for 20 to 30 minutes. They can be left in longer but 20 minutes is generally the length of time it takes to complete the treatment.
