About This Procedure
There are several factors that contribute to loose, hanging skin on the arms, including genetics, the natural aging process, weight fluctuations and long-term sun exposure. Some individuals with flabby arms report being self-conscious or embarrassed, so much so that they avoid wearing sleeveless shirts or even lifting their arms in public.
Arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, removes loose, sagging skin on the upper arms, creating a slimmer and smoother contour. Following the procedure, patients report a boost in self-confidence as they no longer feel they have to hide their saggy arms. Their wardrobe options expand as shirts fit more easily around the arms and flatter the upper body. Exercise also becomes more comfortable and enjoyable as it becomes easier to move the arms.
Patients trust the plastic surgeons at Franciscan Health for safe and long-lasting arm lift results. Each plastic surgeon has undergone extensive training and possesses the skill necessary to restore a slimmer and sleeker arm contour.
Arm Lift Candidacy
Ideal candidates for arm lift are individuals who:
- Have excess, loose skin on the upper arms that bothers them
- Experience physical discomfort (e.g., infections and rashes) when moving the arms due to lax, heavy skin on the upper arms
- Have localized deposits of fat and tissue on the upper arms
- Are in good overall health
- Do not smoke
- Have realistic expectations
Brachioplasty Procedure Details
Arm lift is performed as an outpatient procedure, either under general anesthesia or local anesthesia. The plastic surgeon creates an incision, usually on the inner surface of the upper arm, extending from the elbow to the armpit. In other cases, the incision is limited to the underarm area. The plastic surgeon will decide on which incision pattern is best depending on the patient's anatomy and desired outcome. Excess skin is excised and fat is removed using liposuction techniques. The remaining tissue is repositioned for a smoother contour and the skin is tightened and pulled together using sutures. A small tube may be placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid from the treatment area. The surgeon will remove the tube sometime after surgery. The arm will then be dressed with bandages and a compression garment will be placed on top to minimize swelling.
Arm Lift Recovery
Patients should plan to take at least one week off from work and their normal routine after surgery. During this time, they should rest with their arms elevated as much as possible. A compression garment should be worn at all times until the doctor says otherwise. Vigorous activities including aerobic exercise and lifting the arms should be avoided for at least six weeks. Although some of the results from arm lift will be noticeable immediately after surgery, the final results will take several months to become visible.
