Our Approach
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that causes people to have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Sleep is critical to your health. If insomnia isn't treated, it can take a toll both mentally and physically.
Insomnia may be acute (lasting one night or a few weeks) or chronic (lasting at least three nights a week for a month or longer). If you have trouble sleeping, we have treatments that can improve your sleep and health.
Insomnia treatment
There are two types of insomnia. Primary insomnia is not associated with another health condition. Secondary insomnia originates from another condition, such as pain or alcohol use.
Chronic vs. acute insomnia
Treatment depends on whether your insomnia is acute or chronic:
- Acute insomnia: You may not need treatment, but your doctor may prescribe sleeping pills for a short period of time.
- Chronic insomnia: We will address any health conditions that may contribute to chronic insomnia. If insomnia continues, your doctor may recommend:
- Behavioral therapy addresses your thoughts and behaviors that may be impacting sleep.
- Relaxation exercises can help to reduce tension and improve sleep.
- Sleep restriction therapy uses an approach that limits time in bed to improve sleep.
- Reconditioning works to help you re-associate bed and your bedtime routine with sleep.
Diagnosing insomnia
Our sleep doctors diagnose insomnia by performing a physical exam and reviewing your medical and sleep history. We may also:
- Have you record your sleep patterns in a journal for several weeks and track how you feel during the day
- Ask to speak with your partner about your sleep behavior
- Perform a blood test to check for thyroid problems or other conditions
- Suggest an overnight sleep study
