Pediatric Sleep Studies

Our Approach

If your child isn’t sleeping well, you probably aren’t either. A pediatric sleep study can determine the cause of your child’s poor sleep and help our doctors recommend the right treatment.

Franciscan Health sleep centers provide a welcoming environment for your child, along with the latest technological advances. Our staff focuses on the comfort and care of your child.

What happens during a pediatric sleep study?

You’ll stay with your child throughout the entire overnight sleep study. While we use a lot of equipment to conduct the test, our technologists will explain everything. They can answer any questions you or child may have.

A polysomnographer (sleep technician) will attach monitoring equipment to your child’s head, face and legs, along with an EKG monitor and respiratory effort belt. We’ll also use a fingertip pulse oximeter and nasal airflow equipment to measure your child’s breathing. The entire study is painless.

A sleep technician will monitor your child from a nearby room and can help with any needs during the night. We’ll record the study with audio and video. After the study is complete, we’ll remove the monitoring equipment, and you and your child can go home.

A technician will report the study findings to your child’s doctor, who will review the results with you and suggest treatment options.

Symptoms of pediatric sleep disorders

Talk to your pediatrician about a sleep study if your child experiences any of the following:

  • Health conditions:
    • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
    • Sleep apnea
    • Neuromuscular defects or craniofacial anomalies
    • Large tonsils associated with snoring
    • Obesity
  • Nighttime issues:
    • Bed wetting
    • Night terrors
    • Parasomnias (sleep walking, sleep talking, grinding teeth)
    • Waking several times throughout the night
  • School concerns:
    • Poor school performance
    • Daytime sleepiness
    • Inability to stay focused
