Our Approach
Treatment for liver cancer depends on how far the cancer has progressed. The best treatment route for you may include surgery to remove the cancer or replace your liver with a healthy one from a donor. Treatments that apply extreme heat or cold in order to destroy tumor cells may also be used.
Liver cancer, or hepatic cancer, is cancer that starts in the liver. The liver is an organ that filters toxic chemicals from the bloodstream, stores sugar that the body uses for energy and creates bile, which aids in the digestion of fat. The primary type of liver cancer is called “hepatocellular carcinoma” – this occurs when the main liver cells, called hepatocytes, begin reproducing uncontrollably, resulting in a tumor.
How is liver cancer diagnosed?
Your provider may test for liver cancer through a blood test or liver biopsy. Computer imaging tests may also be used including an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), ultrasound or a CT (computed tomographic) scan.
