Our Approach
At Franciscan Health, we offer a number of treatment options as well as a minimally invasive surgery referred to by many as robotic surgery for prostate cancer (the da Vinci® Prostatectomy).
Your physician may recommend a prostate screening, via digital rectal exam (DRE) or a PSA test, to identify prostate cancer early if you are a male that is African American, over the age of 60 or who has a father or brother with prostate cancer.
If screening is positive for cancer, you may be referred to an oncologist, or cancer specialist. Treatment for prostate cancer will vary based on your specific diagnosis and staging.
What is prostate cancer?
Prostate Cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the prostate gland, located beneath the bladder and around the urethra. The prostate gland is a small walnut-sized gland that makes seminal fluid and carries sperm out of the body.
Prostate cancer typically grows slowly and does not spread or cause harm for decades. When caught early, more than 90% of prostate cancer cases can be treated successfully.
