About This Procedure
Nerve integrity monitoring works to compliment surgery as it gives your surgeon a unique set of tools to identify hard to locate nerves, trace and confirm the nerve path, and monitor nerve function in real-time. This can help preserve nerve function and improve patient safety during surgery.
Minimally invasive surgery in the ear, nose and throat is a relatively safe procedure in the hands of a skilled surgeon. However, there is a risk of injury to the adjacent nerves. Particularly in throat surgery or in surgery involving glands in the throat, surgeons must take special care around the laryngeal nerve - the nerve that controls the voicebox. Damage to this nerve can result in a patient having difficulty speaking, breathing and/or swallowing.
