Our Approach
Hearing loss affects nearly 36 million Americans and can have a significant effect on quality of life. Because hearing loss typically deteriorates slowly, patients may not be aware that it’s happening. While it may be the result of age, genetics, illness or continued exposure to loud noises, it can occur suddenly due to trauma or certain illnesses.
If three or more of these statements apply to you, consider scheduling an appointment with one of Franciscan Health’s audiologists to have your hearing checked:
- You have a problem hearing on the telephone.
- You have trouble hearing when there is background noise.
- It's difficult to follow a conversation when two or more people are talking at the same time.
- People get annoyed because you misunderstand them.
- People complain you turn the television up too loud.
- Others seem to mumble or not speak clearly.
- You often ask people to repeat themselves.
- You have trouble understanding the speech of women and children.
- You often hear a ringing, roaring or hissing sound.
- Some sounds seem too loud.
Depending on your symptoms, you may be referred to an ear specialist, an otologist or an otolaryngologist. Prompt medical treatment for sudden hearing loss may increase the chance of recovery.
Hearing loss treatment depends on many factors and may include:
- Diet and/or medicine modifications
- Antibiotics in the case of infections
- Earwax removal
- Hearing aids or implants
- Assisted listening devices for phones and TVs
- Surgery
The best treatment is prevention. Below are some things that can help to prevent hearing loss.
- Wear earplugs, specially designed earmuffs or noise-canceling headphones when exposed to prolonged loud noise.
- Move away from the sound if possible.
- Turn down the volume on your TV and musical devices.
- Have your hearing tested regularly, especially as you get older.
