About This Test
At Franciscan Health, cardiac catheterization is performed by board-certified cardiologists, who work with other members of the catheterization lab team - specially trained nurses, X-ray technologists and registered cardiovascular technologists.
The catheterization lab is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of heart and vascular disease. Procedures performed there include studies of the vessels of the head, neck, heart, legs, lungs and abdomen as well as the application of "clot-busting" drugs and the removal of occlusions/stent placement in the smaller vessels in the legs and liver as well.
If you have had symptoms of coronary artery disease, cardiac catheterization can identify the cause of these symptoms. If you have had angina in the past and now have new or worsening chest pain, this test can help to determine why your pain is increasing.
Cardiac catheterization services
Heart catheterization can be used to determine pressure and blood flow in the heart's chambers, collect blood samples from the heart and examine the arteries of the heart. Specific cardiac catheterization services include:
- Diagnostic heart catheterization
- Carotid artery stent
- Coronary and/or vascular angioplasty
- Coronary artery stent, drug-eluting stent
- Directional coronary atherectomy (DCA)
- Peripheral vascular atherectomy
- Rotoblator (percutaneous transluminal coronary rotational ablation, PTCRA)
- Trans-extraction atherectomy (TEC)
- Coronary arteriography
- Coronary balloon angioplasty, atherectomy, and stent deployment, including drug-eluting stents
- Pacemaker insertions
- Implantable cardioverter defibrillator insertions
- Implantable cardiac resynchronization devices
- Electrophysiology studies
- Radio frequency ablation
- Thrombectomy
- Intravascular Brachytherapy
- Myocardial biopsy
- Pericardiocentesis
- Non-cardiac angiography, angioplasty and stent deployment
- Vascular excimer laser
- Ventricular assist device (VAD) placement (Impella and Tandem)
