What is pathology?

Pathology is the study of disease, and the pathologist works hand in hand with the primary care physician, the surgeon and others to diagnose, confirm and monitor disease and establish a treatment plan.

The physician may look to the pathologist for up-to-date information on the ever-changing world of lab testing. In some cases, the pathologist may make the definitive diagnosis, such as in the case of a breast biopsy for cancer.

Pathology is broadly divided into two categories: anatomic pathology and clinical pathology.

• Anatomic pathology covers the surgical aspect of pathology (examining biopsy tissue), cytopathology (examining cells, such as in a pap smear), and autopsies.
• Clinical pathology is associated with the clinical pathology laboratories: overseeing the lab, consulting with physicians, recommending medical tests and helping interpret those tests, in addition to examining body fluids such as blood and effusions.
