Myomectomy

About This Procedure

Franciscan Health offers minimally invasive da Vinci® Myomectomy to remove uterine fibroids for women who find that symptoms are painfully interfering with their daily lives.

The details of your myomectomy surgical procedure will depend on the location, size and number of fibroids. Certain procedures affect a woman's fertility and are typically recommended for women who are past childbearing age or who do not want to become pregnant. In terms of surgical options, myomectomy is generally the only commonly performed procedure that can preserve fertility.

Robotic-assisted, minimally invasive myomectomies typically result in a shorter hospital stay. However, if the uterine fibroid tumors are extensive or your doctor feels it warranted, an overnight observation may be needed.

What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that originate in the muscular wall of the uterus. Fibroids are the most common type of tumor found in female reproductive organs.

Preparing for myomectomy

Before deciding to have surgery, ask your doctor or nurse what to expect after the procedure. Many women notice changes in their body and in how they feel about themselves. Talk with your doctor, nurse, family or friends about these possible changes before you have surgery.

Recovering from a myomectomy

Recovery after surgery to remove uterine fibroids can several weeks. You will be provided you with specific directions before you leave the hospital. You may have some pain after surgery and will be asked not to lift heavy things or engage in certain activities.
