What is PCOS?
PCOS is a hormone condition common in women of childbearing age. The condition gets its name from one of its symptoms. Women with PCOS often have enlarged ovaries that are prone to fluid-filled cysts. They may also have excess levels of androgen, a male hormone.
The cause of PCOS is unclear, but women with a family history of the condition may be more likely to develop it.
PCOS usually starts around age 12 or 13. It has long-term health risks, including:
- Infertility
- Heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes
