At Franciscan Health our physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) or physiatry team works collaboratively alongside a patient's primary care physician, neurologist, psychiatrist and any other providers to develop a treatment plan that works towards improving quality of life and restoring function lost due to injury, illness, or disability. 

What is a Physiatrist?

A physiatrist is a physician who focuses on helping patients to improve physical function and reduce pain associated with an injury or condition.

Who should see a physiatrist? 

Anyone with a functional concern can see a physiatrist— they don’t have to wait for severe complications. Physiatrists’ training overlaps with several medical specialties, which allows them to provide comprehensive care for conditions like brain injuries, pain management and neuromuscular disorders. To enhance patient care, they often oversee a team of medical professionals including occupational therapists, physical therapists and physician extenders.
