About This Treatment
When a traditional land-based rehabilitation program is too challenging for individuals suffering from a diagnosis, aquatic therapy can prove to be a successful alternative. Participants in water exercise do not have to know how to swim; many activities can be performed with feet on the pool floor and plenty of support nearby.
Aquatic physical therapy helps by:
- Reducing or eliminating the effects of gravity on the body. This is helpful if patients are learning to walk again after an injury or if they are uncomfortable exercising outside of the water.
- Offering natural resistance to movement, allowing individuals to strengthen muscles as they perform a variety of activities.
- Providing a total body workout, improving general strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness.
- Providing a more relaxing environment for patients' joint pains and limited movements.
