At Franciscan Health we strive to improve quality of life for all our patients. Our Return to Driving program is a way for individuals to regain their freedom and independence. This program is for patients recovering from injuries, surgeries or medical conditions that have impaired their ability to drive. It offers a structured, clinical path back to their daily activities, including driving.About This Treatment
Safety is the top priority, both for the patient and for others on the road. We help prepare individuals for behind the wheel evaluations by addressing skills required for safe return to driving.
What To Expect
Patients will undergo a standardized screening to assess performance in physical, cognitive and visual skills, and the potential impact on their ability to drive. Through the course of treatment, therapists will use a variety of assessments, comprehensive vision screens, and the STISIM driving simulator. Once completed, the information will be shared with the patient's referring physician regarding the ability to return to driving. Our clinics offer flexible scheduling to accommodate the patient’s needs, and support is available every step of the way.
After screening and treatments, recommendations are shared directly with the patient’s physician.
Recommendations could include:
- return to driving
- additional therapy
- a referral to behind the wheel driving evaluation
- driving cessation
Getting the go-ahead to drive will help improve the patient’s confidence behind the wheel, which can be an empowering step in their recovery journey. This program can provide peace of mind for patients and their families by ensuring that they are capable of driving safely and confidently before they take to the road again.
