About This Procedure
A nephrectomy is the surgical removal of a kidney or a section of a kidney. Kidney removal may be recommended for:
- A kidney damaged by infection, kidney stones or other problems
- Injury (trauma) to the kidney that cannot be repaired
- Kidney cancer
- Kidney donation
- Problems with blood supply to the kidneys
Minimally invasive nephrectomy
Franciscan Health surgeons use the da Vinci® Surgical System for robotic-assisted, minimally invasive nephrectomy. Robotic-assisted surgery offers several potential benefits to patients having kidney surgery, including:- Excellent chance of preserving the kidney in certain operations
- Less blood loss
- Lower rate of complications
- Precise tumor removal and kidney reconstruction
- Shorter hospital stay
In cases of kidney cancer, da Vinci® surgery may allow the kidney to be preserved. Using robotic-assisted tools, the surgeon may be able to precisely remove the tumor, leaving part or all of the kidney in place. Preserving the kidney can help prevent future disease or the need for dialysis.
