About This Program
Autism is a wide spectrum disorder that may affect nonverbal, social, behavioral and/or physical development; levels of severity vary from child to child. Focused therapy can help those diagnosed with Autism navigate everyday situations, interactions and enhance overall independence. For children who are fully dependent, therapy may help extend funding and support into adulthood.
Early intervention is key for children with Autism. Studies show that therapy between the ages of two and eight years old greatly impacts development. Therapy for Autism may include weekly physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and / or psychiatry (off-site).
Our Approach
Franciscan Health's multidisciplinary care is customized for each individual and offers patients and their families the convenience of a one-stop-shop, allowing appropriate coordination of appointments and services. We are community focused and base our services on the unique skills, goals and progress of each patient.
Initial visits consist of three consultations with a clinical psychologist to determine the best path of care. These sessions will cover healthy history, area of concern and testing with an OT and PT present. A formal diagnosis is not required for a referral to Franciscan's therapy program. If you have concerns about your child's development, speak with your primary care provider.
Who can benefit from therapy for Autism?
Rehabilitation services may benefit those who are experiencing:
- Speech delays
- Aggression
- Physical deficits (not meeting milestones)
- Body awareness and sensory issues
- Balance issues
- Struggles with daily skills (i.e., dressing and feeding)
Therapy services commonly continue for a minimum of two years; care and services depend on the child and level of severity. Formal diagnosis is not required to begin therapy services.
