Our Approach
Because stroke affects different parts of the brain, each stroke survivor will require a unique care plan. Franciscan Health Stroke Rehab teams develop a personalized recovery plan to help you regain independence as quickly as possible. Some patients will experience recovery quickly and regain functional abilities in the first few days, while others will continue to show improvement during the first six months or longer.
Our stroke rehabilitation programs utilize some of the most advanced technologies available, such as the robotic exo-skeleton gait training system which is used for certain patients and can assist in standing up correctly and walking.
Stroke rehab process
Many stroke survivors will receive some inpatient rehab in the hospital setting or at an inpatient rehabilitation facility. After returning home patients who are unable to leave their home, or qualify for other reasons, may receive home healthcare rehabilitation services. Home healthcare therapy will typically last for a period of time until the patient can transition to outpatient services. Some patients may not need home healthcare and may be able to start outpatient therapy right away.
What does stroke rehabilitation include
Outpatient rehabilitation is provided by our highly qualified stroke rehabilitation therapists. Outpatient stroke rehabilitation can include:
- Physical therapy after a stroke is often focused on things like walking again, getting in and out of bed, etc.
- Occupational therapy after a stroke often focuses on regaining lost function of an arm or hand and might work towards goals such as meal preparation, picking things up, hygiene and more.
- Speech therapy is useful for stroke survivors who struggle to form words, use the right words or numerous other speech related impacts that a stroke can have.
We also offer audiology services for determining and treating issues related to hearing.
Stroke Rehabilitation for a stronger recovery
According to the National Stroke Association, 40% of stroke victims experience moderate-to-severe impairments that require special care. Most people who survive a stroke will have some type of disability. For the best chance of improvement and regaining abilities, rehabilitation should start as soon as possible after a stroke.
Camp for stroke survivors
We have partnered with the Retreat & Refresh Stroke Camp to offer a unique experience for survivors of stroke and their caregivers. This is typically offered once a year at an accessible location near Central or Western Indiana. This is a great opportunity to get away for a weekend and connect with other stroke survivors and caregivers.
